Named after the rain
Ame (雨) means rain in Japanese. Our first piece was a rain mac, sketched during the long tsuyu season in Osaka when the city slows down and everything turns soft and grey. We wanted to make clothes that felt like that season: calm, practical and quietly beautiful.
Today AME is a small team of designers and pattern cutters working from a studio near Nakazakicho. We design a handful of collections each year and produce them in small runs, so that nothing is made just to sit in a warehouse.
Our makers
We work directly with family-run workshops across Japan, many of which have practised their craft for generations.
- Himeji — vegetable-tanned leather for our bags, finished by hand.
- Okayama — selvedge denim and heavy cotton canvas woven on vintage shuttle looms.
- Yamagata — merino and lambswool knitwear from a third-generation mill.
- Osaka — Goodyear-welted boots and loafers made a short train ride from our studio.
Made to be kept
We would rather you bought one coat that lasts ten years than ten that last one. That is why our boots can be resoled, our bags come with lifetime leather care, and every piece is designed to sit outside of trends.
If something you bought from us needs mending, write to us at hello@ameshop.site and we will help.
